Let's talk about estrogen. This vitally important hormone tends to be associated with women, whereas testosterone is thought of as the predominantly male hormone. But this isn't accurate--it's so important to note that while men and women do have different concentrations of these hormones, everyone has a combination of both. (Estrogen is extremely important for you too, men, so stay put!)
If all bodies use estrogen, they can also become estrogen dominant. Too much estrogen causes toxic fat gain, water retention, bloating and more. So, not quite the fist-pumping condition it may seem upon first read, estrogen dominance can cause serious health problems that--BREATHE!--are treatable with a good iodine supplement (and we'll tell you how).
Buckle in folks, you're in for some schooling, a little bad news, and then the great news.
What is estrogen and how does it affect me?
Estrogen is the main female sex hormone, but it's present in everyone. How does estrogen affect male and female bodies, you ask? In females, estrogen plays a major role in the menstrual cycle and reproductive system. In males, estrogen is integral in sexual function.
Developing high estrogen levels, or becoming estrogen dominant, can lead to weight gain and affect your overall health, particularly your sexual development and function.
No one wants that, right?
For one thing, unexplained weight gain can be a real bummer, and we don't want that for your physical, mental and emotional health. Furthermore, since sex helps us to regulate our mood, experience feelings of connection with intimate partners, and maintain a sense of well-being and life satisfaction, having your body working at cross-purposes on this isn't a good feeling.
What are the symptoms of estrogen dominance?
Having too-high levels of estrogen has different symptoms in men and women.
In women, estrogen dominance can result in menstrual problems like irregular periods, spotting or heavy bleeding. It's also associated with symptoms such as bloating, cold hands and feet, fatigue and difficulty sleeping, hair loss, headaches, low sex drive, and mood disorders. Importantly for us, excess estrogen can lead to weight gain around the hips and waist--and many women know how frustrating this can be, especially when it feels uncontrollable and unexplainable.
In men, estrogen dominance may express itself through erectile dysfunction, gynecomastia(enlarged breasts) or even infertility. High estrogen levels can also cause weight gain in older men. Since estrogen is charged with regulating mood and specifically promoting good mood, you may not be surprised to know that some studies have shown men with higher-than-normal estrogen may experience depression.
Ultimately, excess estrogen can lead to more serious health problems, like thyroid diseases, blood clots, heart attack, stroke, breast cancer in men and women (but with a higher risk in women), and ovarian cancer in women.
I know, these are not the optimal conditions for self-confidence. But help is on the way.
What causes estrogen dominance?
To understand what causes estrogen dominance, we must first understand the three main types of estrogen (I promise it's not as complicated as it sounds--and here's an excellent video for reference).
The three main types of estrogen are Estrone (E1), Estradiol (E2), and Estriol (E3).
There are certain conditions that can lead to hormonal imbalance, knocking the proportion of these estrogens and your overall estrogen levels off balance. This can be caused by medications like hormonal contraceptives, certain antibiotics, and some herbal or natural remedies. Health problems such as obesity, ovarian tumors, and liver disease may also increase estrogen levels.
Let's get back to our three estrogen sisters. While E1, E2 and E3 are all types of estrogen, they have wildly different effects on the body.
First of all, estrone is found in fat cells and can convert into either estradiol or estriol. Estradiol is "the strongest of the estrogens," and is the main driver of symptoms experienced during PMS and menopause. Unfortunately, under certain conditions, estradiol can be metabolized into 16-Hydroxyestrogen (16-OH), a carcinogenic compound. In young men in particular, according to a 2018 study involving 4,000 adult male participants, there is a connection between increased levels of estradiol and symptoms of depression.
Estriol is the estrogen we love, however. In contrast from its sister estradiol, estriol protects against estrogenic cancers, decreases the risk of breast cancer and fibrocystic lumps, and helps women who have gained weight due to estrogen-related changes to lose the weight again.
Knowing this, you definitely want to maximize E3-type estrogen!
How can iodine help?
Iodine is not just for thyroid anymore! In fact, many people with thyroid and autoimmune thyroid conditions also have problems with estrogen metabolism. So guess what? Iodine is a vital nutrient for both thyroid and estrogen balance.
Not only does iodine promote healthy detoxification of estrogen, but iodine supplementation also helps to increase E3 levels and maintain long-term estrogen balance in favor of estriol.
~Bonus tip: Increase your estriol by increasing cruciferous veggie intake as part of a healthy diet! This can include broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussels sprouts, and more. Their high concentration of Diindolemethane (DIM) both protects against cancer and keeps estrogen levels in check. Keeping in mind these veggies are healthier raw than cooked, here are some great recipes to try out.~
When it comes to choosing an iodine supplement for estrogen dominance, common potassium iodide supplements won't work. Iodine and iodide are different. While iodide supports the thyroid, it won't help in the arena of reproductive health.
Pure iodine is needed to detox excess estrogen.
