In early December of 2018, manufacturers of Lugol's Iodine 5% were blindsided by selling changes at Amazon. For more than ten years, Amazon allowed the sales of Lugol's Iodine 5%. Then in early December without warning or explanation, Amazon removed all listings of Lugol's 5% from its catalog.
With over 15 years of experience and helping tens of thousands of customers on Amazon, Miss Lizzy is an expert on iodine chemistry, thyroid health, iodine history, iodine quality, and Lugol's iodine regulations.
History of Lugol's Iodine 5 Percent
Lugol's iodine, also known as aqueous iodine or strong iodine solution, is a solution of potassium iodide with iodine in water. Discovered by French physician Jean Lugol in 1829, Lugol's Iodine was unique for its ideal combination of both iodine and potassium iodide.
Many people are unaware that different organs in the body need different forms of iodine. In the 1800s, Lugol's Iodine was so commonly used by doctors, patients were sent home with bottles of Lugol’s Iodine.
Lugol's Iodine Concentration Strengths
The original Lugol's formula of Strong Iodine Solution contains Distilled Water 85%, Potassium Iodide 10%, and Iodine 5%. For this reason, with the iodine content being 5%, Lugol's Solution came to be known as Lugol's 5%. Over the years, different manufacturers have made Lugol's Iodine in varying potencies ranging from 1% iodine to upwards of 15% iodine. However, in 2007 certain concentrations of Lugol's Iodine became regulated in the USA.
2007 DEA Regulation Changes for Iodine and Lugol's Iodine 5
For over 150 years, Lugol's Iodine was a freely available, unregulated product in the USA, used as a general antiseptic, reagent, preservative in baked goods, and in a medical application for humans and animals. In 2007, out of concern for various products being used for illicit purposes, the United States DEA Division changed its regulatory guidelines. As part of this regulation, the DEA included the handling of iodine crystals and iodine solutions containing elemental iodine in concentrations greater than 2.2%. As a result of the new guidelines, Lugol's Iodine in strengths above 2.2% is regulated by the DEA as a List I chemical.
It's important to also note that the DEA website even states: "DEA currently has no evidence that Lugol's Solution is diverted as a source of iodine for illicit purposes."
"Because of the numerous legitimate uses for Lugol's Iodine (including the use as a dietary source of iodine and for thyroid disease), the DEA made an exemption to the regulation allowing transactions of Lugol's Iodine 5% up to 1 fluid ounce (30 mL) per bottle."
Thiodine Lugol's Iodine 12.5 MG vs. Lugol's Iodine 5%
First, it's important to note that Thiodine fully complies with DEA Guidelines and Amazon policy for Lugol's Iodine. The key distinctions between Thiodine and products containing Lugol's 5% are that Thiodine is a USP grade, dietary supplement made for human use. Thiodine is manufactured following the highest standards for quality testing and made in an FDA certified facility under cGMP.
When we created Thiodine we wanted to give our customers the highest quality, highest potency, all-in-one Lugol's iodine supplement that was made and sourced in the USA.
