Lab testing is not the only way to detect low thyroid function. The truth: 98.6°F is an average, not a floor. A consistently low body temperature — alongside hypothyroid symptoms — is a measurable sign of a low metabolic rate. It won't show up on a TSH test, but you can track it yourself at home.
Why your doctor watches for fever but may ignore a low temperature
Most medical attention to body temperature is about high temperature — a fever that signals infection. A low body temperature gets far less attention, even though it's a meaningful sign of low thyroid function.
Part of the problem is that most hypothyroidism is diagnosed on a single number: TSH. A TSH inside the "normal" range is often treated as proof that nothing is wrong, even when your symptoms and your temperature say otherwise.
If that's your situation, be prepared to advocate for yourself. Ask for fuller testing — Free T3 and Free T4, not TSH alone. Track your symptoms and your temperature so you have real data to show. And if a doctor won't look past a single lab value, it's reasonable to get a second or third opinion until you find a practitioner who takes a low body temperature seriously.
What body temperature actually measures
Your body produces heat as a byproduct of metabolism — the chemical work your cells do to turn fuel into energy. The rate of that work is regulated by thyroid hormone, specifically the active form, T3. T3 acts inside your cells to set how fast the mitochondria produce energy and heat. [1]
When cellular T3 activity is adequate, your metabolic rate and heat production hold steady, and your body temperature sits in a normal range. When cellular T3 activity is low, metabolic rate drops, less heat is produced, and body temperature falls.
The link between temperature and metabolism is measurable. In clinical physiology, metabolic rate rises roughly 7% for every degree Fahrenheit of body temperature — about 10 to 13% per degree Celsius. [5] A fever raises energy use for exactly this reason, and a persistently low temperature reflects the opposite: a slower metabolism burning fewer calories at rest. Standard blood tests don't measure that cellular metabolic rate, which is one reason your symptoms and your labs can disagree.
This is also why a low body temperature so often shows up as stubborn weight gain and weight-loss resistance — the slower your resting metabolism, the fewer calories you burn all day. Why standard labs can miss it
TSH is a pituitary signal, not a direct measure of how much active thyroid hormone is reaching and working inside your cells. A TSH inside the "normal" reference range does not confirm that your cellular thyroid activity is adequate.
More complete blood testing — Free T4 and Free T3 — gives a better picture than TSH alone, because it measures the circulating hormone, including active T3. But even Free T3 in the blood doesn't fully capture how much T3 is active inside your tissues.

The conversion problem: T4, T3, and Reverse T3
Here is where many people stall. The thyroid produces mostly T4, an inactive form. T4 has to be converted into T3, the active form, before it can drive metabolism. That conversion is carried out by enzymes called deiodinases, which depend on adequate selenium. [2]
Two things commonly impair this conversion:
- Low selenium. The deiodinase enzymes are selenium-dependent. Without enough selenium, less T4 becomes T3. This is the specific gap Thyroconvert is built to address — it supplies selenium in the forms used for conversion.

The symptoms of a low metabolic rate

How to track your temperature through the day
One reading isn't enough. The most useful way to track temperature is four readings across the day — morning, noon, afternoon, and evening — several days in a row. In a healthy pattern, your temperature is lowest on waking, climbs to an afternoon peak, then eases back by night:
- Morning, upon waking: 97.8–98.2°F
- Midday: 98.2–98.6°F
- Afternoon (2–4 PM): 98.4–98.6°F — the most important reading of the day
- Evening (6–8 PM): 98.0–98.4°F
The afternoon reading matters most. It's the daytime peak, and a consistently warm afternoon temperature is a strong sign that thyroid hormone is reaching your cells and being used effectively. A morning reading below 97.8°F points to a low cellular metabolic rate. It's common for people with a Thyroid Deficit to read lower still — into the 96–97°F range, sometimes lower. A low reading is common, but it is not acceptable or unchangeable.

What your temperature pattern tells you
Two things matter: how low your temperatures run, and how stable they are — across the day, and from one day to the next.
- Low temperatures point to a Thyroid Deficit — not enough active thyroid hormone to drive your cellular metabolic rate.

What actually helps raise a low temperature

A note on thyroid medication
There are three broad categories of thyroid hormone replacement:
- T4 (e.g., levothyroxine). The standard first prescription. It supplies the inactive hormone and relies on your body to convert it to T3. If conversion is impaired, T4 alone may not fully resolve symptoms.
